Southerners are known for their love of warm weather, and we're sure that you've been thrilled with the weather we've experienced recently. You may be daydreaming about the beach trips, pool parties, and lake days that are in your future, and so are we! However, we want you to have fun and practice electrical safety. Here are 6 tips to keep your family safe during the summer months!
Test Your GFCI Outlets
GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, and it's vital that you check that this is working. This lowers the chance that you'll get electrocuted if you drop an electrical appliance into water. GFCI outlets will detect that there is no longer a current and cuts off the power before you're injured. It's especially important to have these outlets in your bathroom, kitchen, basements, or other rooms that may be exposed to water. Don't forget, it's required that you install GFCI outlets for outdoor use because of the increased likelihood that the outlets may be exposed to moisture.
Extension Cords
Have you ever snagged an extension cord from inside and used it outdoors? Well, that's not always the best idea. Outdoor extension cords are made differently from indoor extension cords. If you go to the store, outdoor extension cords are clearly labeled as such, and there are many differences that completely justify the extra purchase. It's worth it to keep you and your family safe. Electric Grills
This should go without saying, however, if there is any precipitation, you should not use your electric grill, or any other outdoor appliance that must be plugged in to function. You want to cook the meat, not yourself!
Major Yardwork
Especially during Springtime, people love to do yardwork and plant trees or flowers. While typical gardening is completely okay, be aware that you may need to check before digging large holes in your yard. In Georgia, you have to call 811 or submit a request to dig at least 48 hours prior to your digging project so buried utilities can be marked by paint or flags. Learn more here.
Pool Equipment
Be sure to check that all electrical pool maintenance equipment is grounded. This can save lives as ungrounded equipment may electrocute those that come in contact with the equipment or water. Not sure if your outlets are grounded? All you have to do is check to see if your outlets have three openings: 2 slits, and one round opening below and centered between the slits. Once you've check this, make sure the plugs for your pool equipment have that round prong. If so, you should be good to go. However, outlets or plugs can fail, so if you would like to further exercise caution, invest in battery powered pool maintenance equipment.
Inform your Children
With warm temperatures, comes the tendency for children to play outside more. It's crucial that your children are aware of signs of danger when playing outside. Here is a good set of guidelines to lay out for your children:
- Don't climb in trees that are close to power lines
- If you hear thunder or see lightning, go inside
- Fly kites in open areas, and not near power lines
- Don't play on or with utility poles
