1. Ask a Neighbor for Help

A trusted neighbor can be an invaluable ally in keeping your home secure. Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your property, collect mail, and remove any flyers or packages left at your door. A home that appears lived-in is less likely to be targeted. If you do not have a trusted neighbor, consider a house sitter for times when you will be away for a long vacation.  

2. Keep Your Yard Maintained

An overgrown yard can signal to burglars that the homeowners are away and provide them with better places to hide as they look for entry points. Regularly mow the lawn, trim bushes, and ensure your property looks well-maintained. Consider installing a timer for your sprinkler system to keep your yard looking fresh while away for extended periods.  

3. Take Precautions with Utilities

Break-ins are not the only thing to protect your home from. It's also essential to prevent utility issues such as electrical problems or water damage. Before you leave, unplug appliances, turn off water valves, and make sure your smoke detectors are working properly. These steps can help reduce the risk of emergencies like fires or leaks while you're away.  

4. Store Valuables Safely

Avoid leaving valuable items like jewelry, electronics, and important documents in plain sight. Use a safe to store these items securely. Additionally, consider keeping curtains or blinds closed to prevent outsiders from seeing inside your home.
